Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **Members Only** are tasked with a variety of responsibilities depending on the court division they are assigned to. As a law clerk, you will gain hands-on experience in a court environment recognized nationally for its innovative work. Your duties will include:
- Supreme Court Law Clerks: Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law, perform legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel issues of law, and assist in the preparation of opinions.
- Appellate Division Law Clerks: Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, proofread published opinions, and edit opinions authored by judges.
- Trial Court Law Clerks: Observe judicial proceedings, attend conferences, receive training in mediation, mediate small claims cases, and summarize information for judges. Work with civil, criminal, and family court matters.
- Tax Court Law Clerks: Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, including reviewing and processing motions, conducting legal research, drafting case management orders, and managing the motion calendar.
- Assignment Judges Law Clerks: Learn all aspects of court administration, assist with emergent motions, conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage the judge’s docket, and regularly communicate with counsel and courthouse staff.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the law clerk positions must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their appointment. The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential for all candidates. It is beneficial to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship, as trial court clerks serving as mediators must complete a Judiciary-sponsored 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent.
Salary Information:
Salaries for the 2025-2026 court term are to be determined based on funding availability. However, salaries for the 2024-2025 court term are as follows:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. Candidates must have high-speed home internet access and install a multifactor authentication app on their . Selected candidates will undergo a thorough background check, including fingerprinting. US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
Candidates hired by the Judiciary must establish residency in New Jersey within one year of employment, unless exempted. Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually, with limited positions in the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, and Tax Court. Most openings are in the Superior Court Law Division and Chancery Division.
